Two Tags from the Maidens ~ ft. Jane Austen and fabulous fictitious characters

Wow, it’s been a long time. I just realized I haven’t blogged all year…. Alas, in that time away, I think I lost the small bit of knowledge I had in writing intros, so lets just get to it, shall we? 😛

I was recently tagged twice by the Maidens of Green Gables for a couple tags , and they look like so much fun! Thank you Katherine and Grace, for the nominations!

(WARNING: this post will probably end up being very long. You have been warned.)

The Jane Austen (This or That) Tag

Rules:

1. Thank and link back to the person who tagged you.
2. Answer the questions
3. Tag 3 more people
4. Add a Jane Austen this or that question (about any of her books) if you want to.

(Disclaimer: I haven’t actually read much of Jane Austen’s, other than Sense and Sensibility, and parts of Pride and Prejudice. So most of my knowledge comes from the movies, I’m afraid. :P)

1) Who is a cuter couple? Emma and Mr. Knightley or Jane and Mr. Bingley?

I’ve never really thought that Emma and Mr. Knightly were cute…? (I mean, I guess they are, but I’ve never thought it.) Jane and Bingley, on the other hand… well…

2) You must go to tea with Mrs. Jennings or Mrs. Bennet. Who would you rather go with?

I would go with Mrs. Jennings. And you know, I can actually imagine myself enjoying a tea with Mrs. Jennings. Just as long as she didn’t start pushing the I’m-going-to-help-you-get-married bit…

Image result for mrs. jennings sense and sensibility gif

….honestly, it isn’t very realistic to think that she wouldn’t, but Imma stick with her anyway.

Image result for mrs. jennings sense and sensibility gif

3) Dance with Edward Ferrars or Charles Bingley?

Mr. Bingley.

Extra points if it’s this Bingley:

I’ll just be one of his background dancers.

4) Who would you rather have as a big sister? Jane Bennet or Elinor Dashwood?

My first thought was Elinor, but then I thought how sweet Jane is…. But Elinor…

Image result for elinor dashwood gif

Yeah, I’ll go with having Elinor as an older sister.

Image result for elinor dashwood gif

5) Worst villain? Wickham or Willoughby?

Oh, why do I have to choose? They’re both scandalous scoundrels–to say the least.

But, after a further moments thought, and small discussion with my brothers (in which, they agreed that out of the two, Thanos is the worst), I would have to say Willoughby is the worse villain for reasons that are too villainous to speak of.

Image result for mr. willoughby sense and sensibilitygif

6) Take a walk with Mrs. Weston or Mrs. Gardiner? (Mrs. Weston is Emma’s old governess and Mrs. Gardiner is Elizabeth’s aunt.)

I would take a walk with Mrs. Gardiner. We might even stop by Pemberley while we’re at it, who knows?

Image result for mrs. gardiner pride and prejudice gif

7) Mr. Darcy or Mr. Knightly?

Image result for pride and prejudice gif

Yeah, not Mr. Darcy. It’s not that I don’t like him, I just like Mr. Knightly better.

8) Whose wardrobe would you rather own: Emma Woodhouse’s (2009 version) or Marianne Dashwood’s (2008 version)?

I don’t actually remember either of their wardrobes, so I had to do a bit of research, you know. Anyway, it looks like Emma’s wardrobe is a bit more modest, but generally I like Marianne’s better. So I wouldn’t mind owning her wardrobe, and I could just make some modifications with my rad sewing skills.

9) Would you rather spend an afternoon with Mary Elliot Musgrove (Persuasion) prattling on about her many ailments and disappointments in life or with Mr. Rushworth (Mansfield Park) who will fill the hours describing in great detail his plans for the shrubberies at his estate?

Gonna be honest, I have no idea who either of those people are. But I think I’ll go with the shrub guy.

Well, that was fun!

Eden Anderson, Penny the Bean, Grace (you know who you are), I’m tagging you all!

Here are your questions to copy and paste:

1) Who is a cuter couple? Emma and Mr. Knightley or Jane and Mr. Bingley?
2) You must go to tea with Mrs. Jennings or Mrs. Bennet. Who would you rather go with?
3) Dance with Edward Ferrars or Charles Bingley?
4) Who would you rather have as a big sister? Jane Bennet or Elinor Dashwood?
5) Worst villain? Wickham or Willoughby?
6) Take a walk with Mrs. Weston or Mrs. Gardiner? (Mrs. Weston is Emma’s old governess and Mrs. Gardiner is Elizabeth’s aunt.)

*BEWARE THE (hopefully minor) SPOILERS*

Goody-two-shoes: A character who was just so morally good

I really didn’t want to say Captain America. It was my first thought, but I don’t know. I want to do someone original. Unfortunately, I couldn’t really think of any other Goody-Two Shoes characters.

Until I remembered…

Image result for fix it felix gifs

Fix-It Felix.

He’s always doing the right thing. Always fixing things. Always trying to eliminate arguments. He’s even pretty nice to Ralph, even when everyone else hates him.

He can also be just plain heroic sometimes…

Image result for fix it felix gifs

And a hop-less romantic…

Image result for fix it felix gifs

And yeah, a Goody-Two-Shoes.

Heartbreaker: A character who made you cry

We’re going to have a dramatic change of tone here…

Margaret Hale.

Image result for north and south gif

I hate to admit it, because I don’t like to own up to crying during romances, but her story does make me cry. She looses everything. Her home, her mother, her brother, her father, her friend.

However, it’s not all the heartbreak that makes me cry. It’s the happy stuff that comes after all that.

You know what I’m talking about.

Parrot: A character who won’t stop talking

Image result for luis from ant man gif

Need I say more??

Image result for ant man luis story gif

Luis from Ant-Man… just…

Image result for luis from ant man gif

…literally won’t stop talking.

Image result for luis from ant man gif

I don’t know why, but I kind of like characters like this…. It might be because I kind of relate to them on a certain level. 🙄 And Luis just has so many hilarious lines and is so loyal to Scotty, even if he does messes things up every now and then.

Devilish: Your favorite Villain

I don’t have one. All my favorite villains are actually good guys…

Image result for timeless flynn gif

…or have redemption arcs, and end up as good guys…

Image result for darth vader return of the jedi gif

…or are messed up people who are sometimes bad and sometimes good…

Image result for loki sometimes I'm envious gif

…or messed up people that I think have the potential to be good….

Quote - Skelley Chase

…or messed up people…

Image result for phantom of the opera mask
YES, THE PHANTOM IS A VILLAIN!!

Okay, so I guess there are some truly villainous people out there that I like. Most of the ones that I like, though have a bit of goodness in them. Except for the Phantom. It’s just his heartbreaking backstory that gets me.

I really can’t stand an all bad, evil-for-the-sake-of-evil, psychopath villain though. They’re just… no. Not good. Don’t like them. Give me a bad guy that at least has the potential to be redeemed.

Love interest: A character who, if alive in reality, you would want to marry

I don’t like this question.

Image result for pride and prejudice mr bennet gif

First of all, all the good ones are already taken.

Image result for anne and gilbert gif
Image result for margaret and thornton gif
Image result for aragorn and arwen knife gif

Second of all, there’s usually a reason the ones that aren’t taken, haven’t been taken.

Image result for while you were sleeping gif

And third… I just can’t think of anyone.

Okay, I’m back after further brainstorming and talking to my sister… and I think I’ve come to a conclusion.

Legolas. (And no, I am not talking about the movie version! Legolas is WAY better in the books. At least he is in the Fellowship and what I’ve read of The Two Towers.)

He’s caring and kind. Immensely strong. He’s killer with a bow. He’s got dashing good looks, which is obviously very important. Obviously. He may be elven, but hey, it’s not the first time an elve has married a human.

So yeah, if he was hypothetically alive in real life, Hypothetical me might want to marry him… And then I would realize that our personalities don’t really go well together, and we’re not really that great of a match and give up on that idea.

I mean, c’mon. Let’s be realistic here.

Sidekick: A character who was always loyal no matter what

So, I also talked about this with my sister, and we came up with an answer that is not Samwise Gamgee, which I was glad of, because as much as I really love Sam, I wanted to do something original.

Image result for steve rogers gif

That’s right. Steve Rogers.

Image result for steve rogers gif

He may not be the sidekick of the story, but he’s kind of Bucky’s sidekick. At least, he has more of the sidekick personality, in my opinion.

Image result for steve and bucky gif

And he never gives up on Bucky. From the beginning when his unit is MIA, to finding out he’s alive and all the shock and drama that comes with that, till the very end…

Image result for steve and bucky gif

I also thought of Alfred Pennyworth, who is also not a sidekick, but still extremely loyal.

Image result for still haven't given up on me alfred gif

Complicated: A character you love and hate

After much thought, I’ve decided (against my better judgement), to put Connor O’Brien here.

Image result for connor chesapeake shores gif

Here’s the deal, he can be a jerk. A smart-aleck, know-it-all. A whiny infant. And then, just when you think that he can’t be more of a jerk… he does something. like stepping out of his comfort zone to make amends with a family member. Or say something funny, or sweet, or super relatable. And then just when you think, “Oh, Connor’s not that bad. He’s actually kind of a dear,” he’ll go and do something again, that makes you want to scream, “Ahh! Why are you the way you are??”

Image result for connor chesapeake shores gif

So yeah, definitely a love-hate relationship there.

Oddity: A character who was strange, but you loved them that way

Stephen Leeds from Brandon Sanderson’s Legion. He’s quite strange.

Image result for stephen leeds

I feel like that about sums it up. Stephen is kind of a mad genius. His mind is full of different people that deal with different aspects of his genius. For example: he has an aspect who is an expert in history and trivia, and one who is fluent in Hebrew, and one who specializes in handwriting analysis, and the list goes on.

File:Legion PL cover art.jpg

His aspects are all so different with their own personalities and everything, it’s hard not to like them. And even though he claims to be normal, I think Stephen can be just as odd on his own. It doesn’t make him less loveable though.

(Also, since we’re discussing strange characters, why aren’t there more crazy MCs? I don’t mean characters who are schizophrenic, but just odd/weird MCs? I want representation. XD)

Queen/King: A female/male character who you admire and aspire to emulate

Mr. Ping.

  • He runs a noodle shop.

Savior: A character who oddly reminds you of Christ

Oh, dear…

Well, one of the first characters that came to mind was the Prince, from The Light Princess by George MacDonald, so I’m just going to run with that.

Image result for the light princess illustration

Where do I start? Well, he meets the Princess and falls in love with her, as Princes often do in fairytales. The thing is… she doesn’t really care for him. Not in the way she should anyway. I won’t tell you the story, but at one point he ends up becoming her shoeblack so that he can be near while she’s dying and confined to her room because of Reasons™, and then he ends up laying down his life so that she can live.

He may not be the most Christ-like character that ever was, (I probably could have put him under the Goody-Two-Shoes section too), but he does remind me of Christ just in how he makes himself a servant, and sacrifices his life, and loves the Light Princess even when she’s a bit airheaded.

Well, that was a bit harder than I expected it to be. But I had fun answering these questions.

And I’m nominating…

Well, that’s it folks. Thanks again to Katherine and Grace from The Maidens of Green Gables. I had a lot of fun with these tags! 🙂

And to you, Dear Reader, I know this post was kind of long, so I hope it was worth your time. 🙂 Let me know in the comments who your favorite villain is. Or if you think I’m totally wrong in choosing Mr. Knightly over the beloved Mr. Darcy. Or if you, too, aspire to emulate Mr. Ping.

Stay lionhearted, my friends!

Peace out.

  1. I LOVE everything about this!!! Oh, oh! And I just watched North and South for the first time (and low key fell in love with Thornton….), and I adored it! I can’t believe I hadn’t watched it sooner! I love a good period drama, and this one was just… heartbreaking. And I also kinda understood the way she kinda hated him for, like, the entire thing, but the whole time I was just like FALL IN LOVE WITH HIM ALREADY. 😂
You’re right, all the good ones are taken.
SHELLEY CHASE. Sooo, maybe I should agree with you that he has the potential of redemption…. but I hate his guts. That book ruined me.
Thank you so much for the tag! And btw, I forgot to tell you but I tagged you a little while ago- https://wellgoread.home.blog/2021/02/04/the-liebster-award-3/

    1. Thank you, Kenechi!!
Ah, YES! I love North and South. It is heartbreaking, but also so good! And I am now going to bug you until you read the book, because as good as the movie is, well, the book is better. 😆 Also, I’m glad I’m not the only one who has thoughts like that in slow-burning romances. 😂 Like, just work out your misunderstanding and get together! Why does this have to be so complicated??
Yeah, Skelley Chase was pretty awful, but I don’t know. He was just written in a way that felt different, and more human than most cold-hearted villains. So… I guess I saw the potential there. 🤷‍♀️
You’re welcome! And thank you again for the tag! Imma try to get to it soon. 🙂

  2. The Gifs and your answers definitely made it worth my time. 🙂

I thought for sure you were going to choose Aslan for the Savior character, but I like your choice too. 🙂 I really need to read some MacDonald! And Aragorn…YASSS! 🙂

    1. Thanks Morgan! I’m so glad you thought so. 😊
You know, I actually thought of Aslan! But I wasn’t sure if that would have been “cheating” since he’s pretty much based off of Christ. 🤷‍♀️ (Prolly just being picky, though. 😝) And yes, I love what I’ve read of MacDonald, but I definitely need to read more too. Hahaha, YAASSSS!! 😂

  3. Such a FUN post! I recently read some Gaskell for the first time and I loved it! Now I can’t wait to watch North and South (after I read the book -that’s my philosophy, lol).

      1. Haha, yes that philosophy has served me well. I enjoy having a picture of the characters and settings in my mind that isn’t influenced by actors. XD
I’ve only read Wives and Daughters so far… The characters are fleshed out so well! I really enjoyed it. I actually only heard about Elizabeth Gaskell a couple months ago, so I’m looking forward to reading more by her. 🙂

  4. I love the fact that you asked why anyone is challenging you on including lots of GIFs. I was thinking the same thing when I read it. I always love the GIFs you put in your posts. I love your answers to the questions. I LOVE these types of fan “quizzes/conversations”! My favorite villain is immediately Loki. Love that guy. I also really like the Joker in the Dark Knight. Mostly just because the acting is so spot on. Okay, I would probably have to pick Mr. Darcy. (I’ve only seen the movie. :P) I like Mr. Knightley, but I just really liked the character and personality of Mr. Darcy. It’s funny that you chose Mr. Ping, bc I was just talking about how surprisingly in depth the characters of those movies are. They have some really good morals and character arcs in them, and so, I also think that Mr. Ping was a great dad and character.

    1. That you, Kyndal!
I know, right?? There were honestly so many gifs that I could have used, but I didn’t want to make anyone suffer through a slow death by GIFs. 😂
Yes! I always love discussing and analyzing characters. It’s one of those things that I could talk about all day. 😝 Loki! Yes! He’s an awesome character. Infuriating sometimes, but his character was just so well done. 🙂 The Joker…*shudders* I will admit, he was a great villain for Batman (just in how he challenged him), and the acting was really good, but ooh, I didn’t like him. 😛
Yeah, Mr. Darcy is a pretty good character, once you get past the prejudice. 😉 Which version do you like?
I know! It’s interesting how deep a lot of the characters and themes from “children’s movies” can be, and a lot of times those end up being my favorites. 🙂
