Hey friends, and happy Wednesday!
I didn’t really have a plan for what to post this week (well, I did, but it kinda fell apart 😛), but then I remembered I had this poem that I wrote one night a couple years ago when I was having trouble falling asleep, and it still makes me happy, even though it could probably—well, definitely use some editing. Anyway, I thought I’d share it.
Here ya go. (:
I am a midnight soul,
Restless, searching for stars.
Tired, with a ache sleep can’t fill.
Looking for wonder in a world that slumbers.
I am a wandering child.
Hopeful, as I step into darkness.
The trees, their silhouettes towering over me,
Are dark and heavy.
The wind makes them whisper,
And I feel it, wrapping my body with it’s playful rushes.
The vastness of the sky is a mirror,
Speaking to a wildness inside me.
I don’t belong here.
To this world,
To this darkness.
I don’t belong.
This is a whisper to my soul,
A secret from the Heavens.
I am a longing heart.
Anxious, in waiting for a call.
Worn, that ache for something greater.
Searching for something this world can’t offer,
Yearning for a place to call home.
I look to the stars,
And they wink, dancing, offering hope,
Sharing laughter with a girl who doesn’t belong.
So I raise my hands,
Unseen in the night, closing my eyes.
I feel the tug of time on my heart,
Like the wind, passing through my fingers,
Never to be caught again.
My heart calls me to leave,
drifting with the wind.
But I wait.
Arms lifted, eyes closed.
A spectacle this world will call foolish.
I am a daughter waiting,
For a breath that stills my wayfaring heart,
For a smile that calls me to rest,
For a voice that whispers,
“No more searching,
I am here,
Right beside you,
In the rustling of the wind,
In the vastness of the stars,
In the wildness of your wandering heart.
You don’t belong to this darkness,
To this night.
For you are Mine.”
So there you have it!
I think I’ve found a love for free verse. I’m rather terrible at coming up with rhymes that don’t sound nursery-esque, but with this format you can just pour out your thoughts and make them poetic, and *whispers* nobody has to know that you have no idea what you’re doing.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this. Have you ever written poetry? What’s your favorite format? Tell me all about it! …And please give me tips, haha!
Until next time, stay lionhearted. (:

Aaahhh this was beautiful!! And it left me with that same breathless longing, but also a warm feeling of love and peace at the end. ❤
I've actually never tried free verse because of how…free it is. XD It made me nervous, but I might have to give it a go sometime! You're right, you sound like you know exactly what you're doing 😂

I think your poem is lovely the way it is! Free verse poems are the best! I enjoy writing them. Whenever I get caught up in all the feels, I write a poem. The verses flow pretty freely when I’m in that state of mind. I usually rhyme my words, sometimes using the typical every other line method (whatever that’s called XD). But a lot of times I change it up, even mid poem, which probably ain’t right, but whatever😂.

I love this line:
“I feel the tug of time on my heart,
Like the wind, passing through my fingers,
Never to be caught again.”
That’s so beautiful! I’m not really a poetry writer, (I find the rhyming and beats intimidating) but free verse sounds and looks beautiful. Thanks for sharing this poem.

Thank you, Lily!! 💛 I’m so glad you liked it. I’m not really much of a poetry writer either (should try to get back into it), but I do really enjoy free verse. 😁
